Sitting at the Feet

Luke 10:38-42 (BSB): As they traveled along, Jesus entered a village where a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home. She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to His message. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations to be made. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her to help me!”

“Martha, Martha,” the Lord replied, “you are worried and upset about many things. But only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, and it will not be taken away from her.”
A Facebook notification just buzzed. An urgent email just came in from the boss. A coworker just walked, over and asked you “if you heard about” so and so. You just got another text… and another… and another. It’s now 9:55AM and you’ve accomplished nothing.

Sound familiar?

What I find most interesting about the passage above is that Christ responds that “only one thing is necessary” – only one thing – is necessary. Not pretty good, not important, but “necessary.”

Mary had a choice: she could be, like Martha, consumed with the never-ending to-do list and infinite distractions the world offers; or she could sit at the Master’s feet and hear what he had to say that day. Our relationship with God is, truly, the only thing that matters. Have you spent time with Him today or did you jump into the hustle and figure you’ll catch up with Him later?

Matt. 6:33-34 (BSB) But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you. Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Today has enough trouble of its own.
